Test instrument Instrument for the measurement of blood sugar concentrations has a test field with electrodes for the test strip and a circuit for measurement/evaluation of the current strength for display, with a housing (10) to give a laying surface (12) for the test strip (14) which works with an electric current.. It has a test field (18) with connected electrodes (20), and a circuit (24) for the measurement and evaluation with measurement feelers (28) in contact with the electrodes (20). The circuit (24) sets the display (22). The measurement and evaluation circuit (24) is at a programmable computer to determine the blood sugar concentration. An Independent claim is included for determining the concentration of a substance in a liquid, and especially to register blood sugar levels. The liquid is applied to the test field (18) of a test strip (14) which uses an electric current for its operation. The oxidation flow is registered at the test field (18), for evaluation. The timed development of the oxidation flow current strength is registered from the start of the liquid application in defined time segments. The initial extreme value of the current strength is compared with at least one threshold value, and a display is triggered according to the comparison. The current strength is scanned in short scanning periods against the defined time segments. A set time span is displayed where additional dosages of the liquid can be made. The time that the extreme value is achieved is registered to give the zero point for reaction time measurement and to form the start of the current strength/time curve against time.
