A base cloth for an air bag comprising AJL woven fabric which has, as wraps and wefts, polyamide fibers containing copper compounds in an amount of 1 to 200 ppm in terms of copper and having a single yarn fineness of 0.5 to 4.5 dtex and a total fineness of 67 to 250 dtex, has a product of a total fiber fineness and a fabric density of 20,000 or less, has an oily agent adhered thereto in an amount of 0.8 wt % or more, and has a weight per area of 250 g/m<2> and a thickness of 0.30 mm or less. The base cloth for an air bag comprises a woven fabric having a surface roughness (SMD) according to KES measurement of 1 to 7 mu m, a mean deviation (MMD) of friction coefficient of 0.01 to 0.04, an average flexual rigidity (B) of 0.5 to 5 mN . cm<2> , a flexual recovery in terms of an average hysteresis width (2HB) of 0.5 to 5 mN . cm/cm, can be used for manufacturing a light weight air bag capable of being folded up with no reverse folds and of being developed smoothly upon expansion, is almost free from the decrease of the tear strength of the fabric after FMVSS accelerated heat resistance test and satisfies the FMVSS flame retardancy requirements.
