A simple, safe electronic settlement system. A user terminal (20) such as a portable telephone is connected to a synchronous server (30) by radio. A register server (14) of a mail-order shop starts up a virtual register terminal (12) and connects it to the synchronous server (30) through a leased line. The synchronous server sets a trade identification number for identifying a trade and sends information about the register server and the trade identification number to the user terminal. The user confirms the register server and returns the trade identification number to the synchronous server. The synchronous server completes the settlement between the virtual register and user terminals correlated with each other by means of the trade identification number. The user can complete the settlement of the mail-order without allowing the mail-order shop to know the user's personal information including the credit card number and the password, and therefore the security is improved.
