A network computer system comprises a server computer (20) and a plurality of client computers (10) linked with said server computer. An address data field that can be transmitted via the network and that contains address information that unambiguously identifies the server computer and/or the data contents that are stored in said server computer are allocated to the server computer (20). In the world wide web (www), said address data field is represented by the uniform resource locator (URL). According to the invention, the address data field is used to transmit useful information in addition to the addressing information, said useful information being chosen by the server computer (20) independent of the addressing information. The inventive system facilitates the transmission of additional information such as the latest news, stock-market prices, advertisements and the like that is directed to the user of the client computer (10).
