The present invention relates to a cord-type gas generator (10) used for generating a gas in order to inflate an airbag in an automobile safety system. The generator includes a solid rod of a combustible solid material (12) housed in a sheath (13) and made of a gas-generating material as well as an ignition means. A protection device (14, 15, 16, 17) for the airbag material is provided on the external side of the sheath (13).
