According to the present invention, the coefficients (w(0) and (w(1) of an equaliser are adapted using an error correction algorithm in order to minimise interference between symbols. The purpose of the invention is to prevent a coefficient migration during adaptive equalising. To this end, the coefficients (w(0) and (w(1) determined using the error correction algorithm are modified using a correction term (kt(0), kt(1)) so that the equaliser transmission function has a favourable value outside the utility signal frequency range for one or more preselected frequencies.
