The present invention relates to a method for regulating autonomic functions, such as blood pressure, and further to a method for treating pain by prolactin-releasing peptide (PrRP) or through its receptor. This peptide regulates blood pressure and pain mechanisms, and is expressed in complementary areas with neuropeptide FF (NPFF). Specific antisera developed against the N- and/or C-terminal domains of PrRP may be used for diagnostics.
