The receiver has a first stage for receiving a stream of digital data and for analysing successive sections of the stream of data to identify a predefined pattern within it and a second stage for delivering the received digital data to the first stage in accordance with a first state in response to detection of the predefined pattern of data in the received digital data and for delivering other data in a second state in response to the failure of the first stage to detect the predefined pattern. Independent claims are also included for a data transmission system and for a data reception method.
