A removable digit insert device (16) for a bowling ball (10) in which the bowling ball (10) has at least one elongated hole (12) extending inwardly along a preset axis from an outer surface of the bowling ball (10). The insert (16) includes a base (18) which is dimensioned to fit into the bowling ball hole (12) so that an outwardly facing surface (22) of the base (18) is spaced inwardly from the outer surface of the bowling ball (10). This outwardly facing surface (22) of the base (18) lies in a plane substantially normal to the preset axis of the bowling ball hole (12). An elongated sleeve (30) is slidably received in the bowling ball hole and this sleeve is dimensioned such that, with an inner end of the sleeve in abutment with the outwardly facing surface of the base (18), an outer end of the sleeve is substantially flush with, or sightly recessed into, the outer surface of the bowling ball. This sleeve, furthermore, includes a bore adapted to receive a digit, such as a finger or thumb. The sleeve is releasably lockingly secured to the base at at least two preselected indexable rotational positions of the sleeve (30) relative to the base (18).
