The invention relates to a position-measuring device, comprising a single-line, absolute (pseudo-stochastic), code. In said position-measuring device, as few code elements (10, 100) as possible with identical characteristics should be arranged next to one another in the direction of measurement (X). The invention achieves this by having a second code word which follows the first code word and consists of code elements (100) that exhibit inverse characteristics to the code elements (10) of the first code word. A code element (100) of the second code word is inserted each time between two code elements (10) of the first code word.
