In a GSM mobile wireless telecommunications system, a method for broadcastin g messages over a CDMA air interface includes conveying a message to a base station substantially in accordance with a GSM cell broadcast service protocol, and transmitting the message to a mobile station over the CDMA air interface. The message is transmitted substantially in accordance with a CDM A transmission standard, preferably the IS-95B standard.
