The invention relates to a method for fetching tables with sparsely indexed data (i.e. the indices are not systematic, e.g. due to deletions/changes to the table) using approximation operations such as a GetNext SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) operation. Data packets containing a plurality of approximation operations are sent by a network management station, with at least one of the approximations specifying a "speculative" approximation. The approximation operations retrieve data objects from a table which have indices closest to approximated values. The speculative approximations may be calculated using seed values, or they may be based on the index values of data obtained by the management station during a previous retrieval. By using speculative approximations it is possible to retrieve tables, such as SNMP MIB (Management Information Base) tables, more quickly and efficiently.
