PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rope retainer excellent in safety such that it causes little damage to a main rope and can surely prevent an operator from falling. SOLUTION: Engaging teeth 12b are provided at the end of a pawl 12 freely oscillatably supported between the pair of side plates of a rope channel 11. A recess 23 is formed on the inner periphery of the rope guide 11a of the rope channel 11 and a projection 26 is provided on the inner periphery of the recess 23. When the engaging teeth 12b of the pawl 12 engage a main rope passed through the rope guide 11a, the main rope is deformed along the inner periphery of the recess 23 and pressed against the projection 26 to enhance the antislip effect of the rope channel 11 on the main rope. Also, the plurality of engaging teeth 12b are brought into engagement with the main rope to reduce the amount that each engaging tooth 12b bites into the main rope so as to prevent damage to the main rope.
