PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a flame retardant resin composition not containing chlorine, formed into flame retardant one even with a small amount of a flame retardant without reducing the characteristics of the resin, and further to provide a production method thereof. SOLUTION: This flame retardant resin composition comprises a resin such as a thermoplastic resin, e.g. a polyester-based resin, and a thermoset resin, e.g. an epoxy resin, and a flame retardant, and the flame retardant is composed of a fluorine-based inorganic salt, e.g. the one comprising a metal tetrafluoride and an alkali metal, and an aromatic compound, e.g. a novolak resin. The flame retardant resin composition comprises 100 pts.wt. resin and 0.1-100 pts.wt. flame retardant. The flame retardant contains 1-300 pts.wt. fluorine-based inorganic salt based on 100 pts.wt. aromatic compound.
