PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a volatile rust preventive which is excellent in initial rust prevention capability, long-term rust prevention capability, and long-distance effective arrival capability by compounding a nitrite of an organic amine and/or a metal, an ammonium salt of an inorganic acid and/or an organic acid, a metal hydrogencarbonate, and a water-retaining or sustainedly water-releasing assistant. SOLUTION: Preferably, this rust preventive further contains a caking agent and is in the form of tablets or particles. The nitrite of an organic amine is preferably dicyclohexylamine nitrite. The metal nitrite is preferably selected from among alkali metal nitrites and alkaline earth metal nitrites. The ammonium salt of an inorganic acid and/or an organic acid is preferably selected from among ammonium salts of boric acid, phosphoric acid, carbonic acid, sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and organic carboxylic acids, still preferably being at least one salt selected from among water-soluble ammonium salts represented by formulas I, II, III, etc.
