PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound having cyclooxygenase activity inhibitory effect and useful in the therapy of medical symptoms involving prostaglandins as pathogens. SOLUTION: This new compound is a compound of formula I [A is a 1-6C alkylene or NR1; Z is C(=L)R2 or SO2R3; U is CH or N; W and Y are each CH2, O, S or the like; m is 1-3; q and r are each 0-2; X is a halogen, 1-4C alkyl or the like; n is 0-4; L is O or S; R1 is H or the like; R2 is hydroxy or the like; R3 is a 1-6C alkyl or the like], e.g. 6-chloro-2-[(5,6,7,8- tetrahydroisoquinolin-3-yl)carbonyl]-1H-indol-3-yl)acetic acid. The compound of formula I is obtained, for example when A is CH2 and Z is CO2H, by reaction of a compound of formula II with a compound of the formula: C(R6)H(CO2 R2a)2(OR2a is the same as R2; R6 is H or a halogen) and a manganese (III) compound [e.g. manganese (III) triacetate] as starting materials.
