PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow accurate measurement of a tool shape by monitoring an output of a tool detecting device and finding its maximum while a ball rotating end mill tool in a state of the ball end mill tool in contact with a reference surface of the tool detecting device. SOLUTION: A standard tool Ta for calibration to a main shaft is mounted on a main shaft, and the tool Ta is sequentially brought into contact with reference surfaces 13-17 of a tool detecting device 11. A coordinate of each of the reference surfaces 13-17 is found from a moving position (moving positions of respective axes) of the main shaft 8 and an output of the tool detecting device 11. A ball end mill tool Tb is then mounted to the main shaft. The main shaft is moved so that the ball and mill tool Tb comes into contact with the reference surfaces 13-17 in respective axes. Then, the ball end mill tool Tb is rotated at a lower rotation speed than a minimum rotation speed during machining and inversely to the machining time, and an output of the tool detecting device 11 at this time is taken in.
