PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thermoplastic resin film good in water resistance, having high gas barrier properties even under a high humidity condition and capable of being produced industrially inexpensively. SOLUTION: A gas barrier film is produced by coating at least the single surface of a thermoplastic resin film with an aqueous coating soln. comprising a mixture consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (A) and an alkyl vinyl ether/maleic acid copolymer in a wt. ratio of 90/10-40/60 and drying the formed coating layer to adjust the moisture content thereof to 0.1-50 wt.% and stretching the coated film at least unidirectionally to heat-treat the same at 150 deg.C or higher.
