PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a polycarbonate resin by a simplified process which is little in content of impurities, volatile impurities in particular, and excellent in thermal stability, color stability and hydrolysis resistance. SOLUTION: The method of manufacturing a polycarbonate resin comprises a melt polycondensation reaction of an aromatic dihydroxy compound and an aromatic carbonic acid diester in the existence of a polymerization catalyst, feeding the obtained polycarbonate to a twin-screw extruder with multi step vents, kneading a mixture solution of water and a catalyst deactivating agent with the polycarbonate and subjecting the mixing to a pressure reducing treatment. The polymerization catalyst is composed of 1×10-8 to 5×10-5 equivalent of an alkali metal compound and/or an alkaline earth metal compound and 1×10-5 to 5×10-3 equivalent of a nitrogen-containing basic compound per 1 mol of the aromatic hydroxy compound. The polycarbonate and the mixture solution are kneaded under an absolute pressure of 0.3 to 10 MPa at a temp. of 200 to 350 deg.C for 0.1 to 100 seconds.
