PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an antimicrobial agent capable of causing an excellent antimicrobial activity, having high safety, widely applicable to foods and beverages, cosmetics, and the like, by making the agent include an extracted fraction of Sake (rice wine) lees with ethyl acetate as an active ingredient. SOLUTION: This antimicrobial agent comprises at least one of a compound of formula I, a compound of formula II and a salt thereof as an active ingredient. The compounds of formula I and formula II are preferably derived from rice and/or its processed products (preferably Sake lees). For example, an extract of Sake lees with ethyl acetate is purified by reversed-phase HPLC to give a white crystal compound having antimicrobial activity. Consequently, the agent has not only excellent antimicrobial activity but also extremely high safety, is useful without anxiety as an antimicrobial agent for beverages, foods, medicines, and the like, for sterilization and prevention of decay, or the like. The antimicrobial agent is excellent with respect to the effective use of by- product of refined Sake.
