PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain, through a simple process and in high selectivity/high yield, the subject compound having high purity and useful as an intermediate such as for a raw material for pharmaceuticals or industrial chemicals, by hydrogenating a specific substituted biphenol in the presence of a specific palladium catalyst in an organic solvent. SOLUTION: This compound of formula II [e.g. 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl) cyclohexanone] is obtained by hydrogenating a substituted biphenol of formula I (R1 and R2 are each H or a 1-6C alkyl; m and n are each 0 to 2) [e.g. bis(4- hydroxyphenyl)] in the presence of a palladium catalyst in which 10-30 wt.% of palladium is supported on a carrier such as carbon in an organic solvent such as 2-butanol, preferably at pref. 110-160 deg.C, under a hydrogen pressure of 2-8 kg/cm2-G, for 3-7 h. It is desirable to use 0.2 to 2 pts.wt. of the above catalyst and 100 to 150 pts.wt. of the above solvent based on 100 pts.wt. of the compound of formula I.
