PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a brilliant coating film having further improved thermal stability and multicolor properties permitting display of plural subdued colors according to viewing angles. SOLUTION: The subject multicolor coating composition comprises a vehicle and a silica flake pigment coated with a metal oxide, and exhibits a color difference of less than 0.5 between a coating film obtained by baking the coating and a reheated coating film obtained by heating the coating film under the baking condition and subsequently leaving it at room temperature for 10 min. The subject method for forming a coating film comprises a step of forming a base coat layer on a substrate using the multicolor coating composition and a subsequent step of forming a topcoat layer using a clear coating.
