PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent erroneous detection of protrusion by swelling of packing and a label by arranging a protrusion detecting means for separately detecting whether it is protrusion of an article itself or protrusion of packing and outer packing such as a label in a carrying device for detecting protrusion of the article from a cargo bed of the carrying device. SOLUTION: A stacker crane 2 of an automatic warehouse lifts a transfer device 12 for transferring an article 6 together with a pallet 10 by a lifting table 14, and prevents protrusion of the article 6 by blowing wind against the article 6 from nozzles 16 of four air blowers installed on a cage 22 of this lifting table 14. In this case, the lifting table 14 is provided with a noncontact protrusion detecting sensor having a light emitting part 24 and a light receiving part 26. A signal processing part 30 checks whether or not a protrusion detecting signal from the light receiving part 26 continuously exists for a prescribed time or more to judge that it is protrusion of packing 8 when the duration of the protrusion detecting signal is less than the prescribed time and that it is protrusion of the article 6 itself when the duration is not less than the prescribed time.
