PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst for producing methacrolein or methacrylic acid in a high yield at a time of the gaseous phase catalytic oxidation of isobutane by adding a specific component (B) to 100 pts.wt. of a specific component (A) in a specific ratio. SOLUTION: A component (A) is a solid catalyst containing molybdenum and vanadium and a component B is either one of molybdenum oxide (B-1), composite oxide (B-2) of molybdenum and tantalum and composite oxide (B-3) of molybdenum and niobium or a mixture of two or more kinds of them. As molybdenum oxide (B-1) used as the component (B), molybdenum trioxide and molybdenum dioxide are pref. Composite oxides (B-2), (B-3) to be used are obtained by mixing a tantalum raw material or a niobium raw material in an aq.soln. and stirring the resulting mixture under heating to dry the same and heat-treating the obtained dried mixture. The mixing ratio of the component (B) is 1-100 pts.wt. per 100 pts.wt. of the component (A).
