PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for improving the luminance of an electroluminescent phosphor. SOLUTION: The method comprises the steps of forming an electroluminescent phosphor having a given luminance as a base phosphor, and annealing the base phosphor under temperature and time conditions sufficient to improve the given luminance and form an annealed phosphor. The luminance can be improved by 8% to about 33% when measured in comparison with a control, which is made in the same manner but not annealed. For instance, when a ZmSiCuCl phosphor is annealed at 200 deg.C for 30 to 60 minutes, the luminance is improved by 8 to 24%, and annealing at 250 deg.C for 30 minutes leads to an improvement by about 30%. The sulfate concentration on the phosphor surface increases compared prior to annealing.
