PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a terephthalic ester which has no normal-temperature crystalizability and improved high-temperature volatility by forming an cross mixed ester from at least one monohydric alcohol having a specified number of carbon atoms, 2-ethylhexanol, and terephthalic acid. SOLUTION: A 9-18C monohydric alcohol (A), 2-ethylhexanol (B), and terephthalic acid (C) in a molar ratio of components A/B of (2-98) to (98-2) are reacted in the presence of an alkyl titanate catalyst under stirring under normal or a reduced pressure at temperatures of 100 to 300 deg.C while condensed water is distilled out, thus giving a cross mixed ester. When dimethyl terephthalate or a polyester is used in place of component C, methanol or ethylene glycol is distilled out as a transesterification product. Nonanol, isononanol, decanol, isodecanol, tetradecanol, isotetradecanol, etc., are used as component A. |
