PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-soluble resin excellent in the capacity of adsorbing metal ions by using a copolymer of an N-alkyl(meth)acrylamide with a phosphonic or phosphonic acid monomer having a (meth)acryl group. SOLUTION: The N-alkyl (meth)acrylamide (100 mol.%) represented by formula I (wherein R1 is H or methyl; and R2 and R3 are each H or a 1-6C alkyl. provided that the case where R2 and R3 are H atoms simultaneously is excluded) is copolymerized with 5-100 mol.% (meth)acryl-group-containing phosphinic or phosphonic monomer represented by formula II (wherein R4 is H or methyl; A is a 1-10C alkylene; R5 is H, OH, a 1-10C alkyl, a cycloalkyl, phenyl, a substituted phenyl, or benzyl) and being capable of adsorbing metal ions to obtain a copolymer having a phosphorus content of 1-10 wt.% (in terms of P atoms). The temperature-sensitive function showing flocculating action of the copolymer is given by the N-alkyl (meth)acrylamide monomer, and, especially, by N-isopropylacrylamide shows sensitivity at a temperature of about 33 deg.C.
