The electric safety catch for a firearm has a stop to selectively prevent arming of the pistol. An electronic control circuit (8) releases the trigger actuating mechanism or prevents its connection to stop cocking of the firearm as required. The electronic safety control can be connected to a sensor (10) to identify and authorize the user.
