[Class 49.] Apparatus for pasteurizing wort, beer, milk and other liquids, consisting of a heater for the liquid connected to coolers, is sterilized by passing the liquid, which has been raised in the heater to the temperature necessary for destroying germs, through the subsequent sections of the plant, the cooling being out of action. In the construction described, in normal operation the liquid is forced by a pump 13 from a storage receptacle 15 through a pipe 12 to a heat exchanger 4 in which it is heated by hot liquid in pipe 8 coming from the heater 3 and from which it passes through a pipe 11 to the pipe 8 which conveys it in turn through the heater 3 in which it is raised to pasteurizing temperature by steam or hot water, the heat exchanger 4, and the coolers 5, 6. In sterilizing the plant, the heat exchanger 4 is byepassed by operating a valve 19 to connect the pipe 12 directly to the pipe 11 through a pipe 26, the milk passing directly to the heater 3 and being then passed through a valve 20a, pipe 21, and a valve 24 either back to the receptacle 15 through a pipe 22, or to a separate collecting receptacle 25 through a pipe 23. A throttling member 28 in the pipe 12 is set to a small opening. When the desired temperature is attained, the valve 20 is operated to connect the heater 3 to the heat exchanger 4 and coolers 5, 6 to sterilize the pipe 8 therein, the supply pipes 9 for the cooling medium being closed. The liquid is passed through the apparatus and back through a cock 18 and pipe 17 to the receptacle 15 until the liquid leaving the cooler 6 has reached the desired temperature, after which normal working may be resumed. If a bottle-filling machine or other device is employed after the last cooler 6 it is included in the sterilization and provided with means for returning the liquid to receptacle 15. If, in the normal working, the liquid leaving the heater 3 falls below the necessary temperature, the cock 20 is operated automatically by a thermostat 27 or by hand to prevent the liquid running through and infecting the coolers 4, 5, 6. Milk when treated is supplied at 0-15‹ C. to the preheater 4 in which it is raised to 60‹ C. It leaves the heater 3 at 75-85‹ C. and is cooled in device 4 to about 35-40‹ C., in cocler 5, which is supplied with spring water, to about 11-18‹ C. and in cooler 6, which is supplied with cooled brine, to 2-4‹ C.</p>
