PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a copolymer latex suitable for a compsn. for paper coating having ink drying characteristics and print gloss which are both excellent and balanced with each other, and having excellent other paper coating properties such as bond strength and tackiness preventing properties. SOLUTION: This copolymer latex is obtd. by emulsion polymerization of monomers comprising (a) 20-70 wt.% of an aliph. conjugated diene monomer, (b) 0.1-10 wt.% of an ethylenically unsatd. carboxylic acid monomer, (c) 10-50 wt.% of a cyanovinyl monomer and (d) 0-69.9 wt.% of another monomer copolymerizable with monomer (a), monomer (b) and monomer (c). With the copolymer there exists at least one point of glass transition temp. in the range of -100 to 60 deg.C, and the differenceΔT between the min. temp. T1 and the max. temp. T2 in the transition region of the differential calorimetric curve obtd. by a differential scanning calorimeter is not less than 30 deg.C.
