The mobile telephone switch off mechanism generates an error signal (9) in a given geographic zone (7). A receiver (11) measures the signal powers (10) and those transmitted by other base stations (3,19,22) and chooses the highest power as the candidate signal, synchronising with this signal. The error signal is amplified and sent on this channel using a transmitter (12). The mobile telephone receivers the transmitted signal with an error value, which switches off the mobile phone in the geographic area.
