The invention concerns a security system for a motor vehicle, comprising a RF receiver, set in the vehicle in a location such that the radio-field generated by energising the remote-control member has sufficient power when said member is at some ten metres from the vehicle, a transponder whereof the exchanges with the portable member are carried out at a frequency lower than the radiofrequency, and a central unit for processing the received signals, in particular for decoding them, and for sending challenge signals. The transponder and the receiver are arranged on the housing of a mechanical lock of the steering (20) and are provided with a common coil (22) forming an antenna, connected to the transponder and to the receiver through respective frequency filters.
