Process for preparing effervescent compositions by mixing one or more alkali or alkaline earth carbonates with one or more organic acids in the presence of a small quantity of water in a mixer-granulator, so that the exothermic reaction commences, and then stopping this reaction by evaporation of the water present. The amount of water added is preferably less than 0.1%, especially 0.02-0.05 wt.% and the heat required for the evaporation is preferably that generated by the mechanical action of the mixer-granulator. Preferably the temperature does not rise above 65 deg C. After mixing and granulation the components may be treated with active materials and adjuvants such as compression agents, binders and lubricants, and compressed to form tablets. Suitable bicarbonates include those of sodium, potassium, and ammonium, and suitable carbonates are those of potassium, lithium, ammonium, calcium, magnesium, ferrous or ferric, and strontium. The acid component may be a single substance or a mixture of acids, or it may contain an acid salt such as a monocitrate, monotartrate, monoglutamate, monoadipate, monophosphate, acid sulfate, bisulfate or an ion exchange resin in acid form.
