The starter motor has a two part axially aligned housing with low axial play in the inductor shaft. The motor is of the type having a housing formed by a first part having a first location (72) and a second part having a second location which is axially aligned with the first location (72). Each location has first (73) and second rotational guides and a first (78) and second axial stops. The motor has an inductor winding shaft (18) having a first end section (52) and a second end section (42) each of which is guided to rotate respectively by the first (73) and second guides. The motor is of the type which after mounting of the stop (78) in the location (72) of the inductor shaft (18) in the rotational guide (73) and axial assembly of the two parts of the housing, there is an operational play (J1) which corresponds to play between the free ends of the shaft end sections (42,52) and the stop (78). The first axial stop (78) is clamped in the first location (72) in an initial position so that it can be axially adjusted at the time of mounting. At the time of mounting of the first end section (52) of the shaft (18) in the first location (72), the end section (52) comes into contact with the first axial stop (78) on which it exerts a force designed to displace the wedges axially in the first location up to a final position (90) which is reached when a shaft (18) reference part reaches an pre-determined axial reference, so as to reduce the operational axial play (J-1) to a value close to zero.
