The process involves moving a washing cloth (4) periodically against the cylinder surface. As the cylinder rotates so the wash cloth is advanced at least once during the washing of the cylinder surface. A contact pressure element (2) pressing the cloth against the surface is lifted only so far from the surface until the contact pressure of the cloth reaches a value allowing the cloth to move up.
