PURPOSE: A refrigerant control device and method of multi-split type air conditioner are provided to pass refrigerant, supplied by a compressor, exceeding capacity of an indoor unit. CONSTITUTION: A refrigerant control device comprises a compressor(11); a first bypass part(12); an outdoor heat exchanger(13); a liquid receiver(14); a second bypass part(15); a distributor(16); indoor heat exchangers(17); a service valve(18); and a gas-liquid separator(19). The first bypass part passes part of refrigerant discharged from the compressor. The liquid receiver passes only liquid refrigerant out of refrigerant discharged from the outdoor heat exchanger and stores surplus refrigerant. The second bypass part passes part of liquid refrigerant discharged from the liquid receiver. The distributor receives refrigerant discharged from the liquid receiver to distribute to multiple indoor units. The service valve connects the outdoor heat exchanger with the distributor. The gas-liquid separator is attached to a front end of the compressor to separate gas from refrigerant taken into the compressor. The first and the second bypass parts comprise solenoids valves(12a,15a) and capillary tubes(12b,15b) serially connected. Refrigerant passed by the first and the second bypass parts is transmitted to the gas-liquid separator again. Amount of refrigerant is determined by diameters and lengths of the capillary tubes.
