The present invention relates to a new combustion retardant for polymer materials that consists of a methyl(oxyalkyl)phosphonoxyethylenemethacrylate of the formula CH2=C(R)-C(O)[0CH2CH2OP(O)(R)(OR1)] where R is CH3 and R1 is CH3, C2H5, C3H7, C4H9. This combustion retardant can essentially be used as a comonomer during the copolymerisation process with methylmethacrylate and also for imparting fire protection properties to chemical fibres. In the last case, a graft polymerisation method is used.
