A novel apparatus for compressing viscous material (100) through openings (4 8) in a stencil (46) is disclosed. The novel apparatus has a compression head (200) which provides a contained environment to direct and to aid the flow o f pressurised viscous material (100) through the openings (48) in the stencil (46). Attached to the bottom surface (216) of the compression head are a pai r of self-compliant blades (216) which are adapted to selectively engage the stencil (46) and to flexibly move across the stencil (46) and which are effective to spread the viscous material across the stencil (46).
