The module has several integrated series connected cells (3a-3c) in a layered cell structure with rear contacts (2a-2c), front contacts (8a-8c) and intermediate, photovoltaically active layers (6a-6c), whereby the rear contact of a given individual cell is electrically connected to the front contact of the adjacent cell in a connection region. A protective trench (9a,9b) is formed inside the lateral region between the rear contacts of two adjacent cells, which is filled with photovoltaically active material, before the formation of structuring lines (5a,5b) and is filled with the finally applied front contact material. An Independent claim is also included for a method of manufacturing a photovoltaic module.
