Microtiter-like plates are described which have paired wells on opposite sid es of the plate that are connected so that liquid can flow freely between the wells in each pair. One well (the "sampling port") in each pair is a "virtua l" well having a very small volumetric capacity compared with the other well in the pair, which also may be a virtual well. Virtual wells confine small volu me liquid samples on a relatively flat surface by surface tension. Liquid sampl es partition between the larger well and the sampling port so that a relatively constant volume of fluid remains in the sampling port even as the liquid volume in the larger well changes. The consistent liquid volume in the sampling port enables reproducible liquid volumes to be transferred from the sampling ports, all of which are on the same side of the plate, to other plates as an array on a matching array of pins.
