The apparatus comprises a processor for controlling the apparatus, and a receptacle for receiving a replaceable part. A first connector is associated with the one receptacle and coupled to the processor. A replaceable part is juxtaposed to the receptacle and includes a second connector that mates with the first connector. The replaceable part includes a serial access memory that is connected to the second connector by only a single wire. The processor device enabled thereby to both read and write data from and to the serial access memory. The serial access memory stores data at least indicative of usage of the replaceable part.
