The apparatus (1) for removal of a coating (21) from a substrate (10) includes a tool (2) with an element (12) capable of subjecting the coating to mechanical impacts. It additionally includes a cooling unit (3) which is connectable to a cooling agent source, and is provided with a nozzle (18) for directing a jet of the cooling agent (carbon dioxide, for example) to the substrate to embrittle the coating to be removed.
