The belt tightener has a cylinder (1) with a piston (2) moving in it and a cable (3) with one end connected to the piston and the other to the restraint system (4). The locking device includes a locking block (15) and a device (17) to pre-stress the block away from the piston towards the inner wall of the cylinder. The block can be wedge-shaped and/or have angled surfaces (14).
