The invention relates to a pyrF gene and to the utilization thereof as selection marker gene for an expression system for the production of protein s in mushrooms of the genus Trametes, Coriolus or Polyporus. The pyrF gene is characterized in that it comprises DNS sequence SEQ ID NO:1 from position 11 33 up to and including position 1877 or DNS sequence SEQ ID NO:2 from position 1 up to and including position 684 or a DNS sequence with a sequence homology greater than 60 % relative to the above-mentioned regions of sequence SEQ ID NO:1 or SEQ ID NO:2.
