PURPOSE: Provided are a cathode active material for lithium secondary battery, which is excellent in electrochemical capability and capacity, and a method for producing the same. CONSTITUTION: The cathode active material comprises macro particles having a diameter of 1-25 micrometer which consists of plurality of fine particles having a diameter of 0.4-0.7 micrometer. The cathode active material is represented by the formula: LixNi1-yCoyO2 (wherein, 0.95 <= x <= 1.96, 0 <= y <= 0.5). The cathode active material is produced by the steps of (i) dissolving lithium salt, nickel salt and cobalt salt in solvent so as to be a molar ratio of 0.95-1.06:0.5-1:0-0.5, (ii) adding chelating agent to the solution, (iii) heating the mixture to form gel, (iv) pyrolyzing the gel to form organic-inorganic precursors, and (v) heat treating the precursors. |
