The invention concerns an electromechanical system for locking in rotation a motor vehicle steering column (1) with a bolt (30), driven by an electronic control circuit, comprising further means for mechanically locking the bolt, formed by a soft iron core (9) designed to move perpendicularly to the direction of the bolt, under the effect of a magnetic field generated in a coil (8) wherein flows a variable current. It further comprises sensors for detecting the position of the bolt (14) and the core (13). Moreover, the circuit controlling the steering lock receives data on the position of the locking means and the vehicle speed, the condition of the engine and possible impacts.
