A bulk lens such as of a shell shape or an egg shape, comprising a bulk lens body having a top part, a bottom part and an outer side part, and a well-shaped recess provided in the lens body from the bottom part toward the top part. A ceiling part of the recess functions as a first lens surface, the top part of the lens body functions as a second lens surface, and the interior of the recess functions as the housing section where a light source or a photodetector is housed.
