The apparatus clamps the rotating cable shrouding strand, on an assembly to twist cables, comprising a central tensioner with clamping wedges (4) which move in and out of the strand holding chambers, held within housing (2). A setting unit (6) acts with a force on all the clamping wedges (4), so that they are pressed radially inwards to clamp the opposite sides of the shrouding strand. The central setting unit is a clamping bush (6), with an axial sliding movement. The setting bush (6) exerts a force through balls (18,26) within the housing (2), and sliding sleeves (20) on the moving clamping wedges (4). The axially sliding clamping bush (6) has a cone surface (16) which moves inwards those balls (18) in slits around the periphery of the housing (2) against the first cone surface segments (24) of the sliding sleeves (20). The effect is to move them axially outwards, and further cone segments (22) move further balls (26) radially inwards to press the clamping wedges (4) radially inwards. At least the second set of cone segments (22) of the axially sliding sleeves (20) form ball cages. Tensed springs (8) at spring bolts (10) give the force to move the clamping wedges radially outwards. The clamping wedges (4) ride in a wedge bush (12), with openings to hold the clamping wedges (4) with a radial movement. The wedge bush (12) is fixed at the housing (2). The clamping bush (6) has a limit stop to give a mechanical movement limit at the wedge bush (12). The wedge bush (12) has a center drilling to center the shrouding strand on an axial movement. The clamping bush (6) is secured axially in relation to the housing (2), which is on bearing mountings. The ends of the clamping wedges (4) have a spiral shape at their flanks, to give a soft transfer in the twist of the shrouding strand.
