During the continuous drying of fabric piece goods, and finishing of the surface structure of pile and toweling and velvet fabrics, the wet material is dynamically processed with mechanical working while the fabric has a residual moisture content of 10-40%. The surface of the damp fabric is worked mechanically, by brushes, evenly over its whole width. A cushion of air or steam is formed under the rear surface of the material, and the gas flows through the material to the upper surface and presses the fabric against the brushes. The mechanical surface brushing and the subsequent drying action are repeated while the fabric is damp, with moisture is sprayed or blown at the material in the form of water or steam. Drying air is used in each drying phase. The fabric is supported by a permeable carrier. The drying air flows through the fabric from the outside, inwards. At zones, a residual moisture content of 10-40% is set by flows of air or steam against the direction of the drying air movement to lift the fabric clear of the carrier against the active mechanical brushes.
