The invention relates to a method for exposing material to neutron flux and to neutron-diffusing element transmuter applicable for the production of useful radio-isotopes for medical application, as well as for effective transmutation of long-lived radioactive wastes such as those from spent nuclear fuel. According to the method the material to be exposed is distributed in a neutron diffusing medium surrounding a neutron source. The neutron medium is transparent to neutrons and so arranged that the neutron scattering enhances the neutron flux to which the material is exposed. Heavy elements such as lead and/or bismuth can be used as diffusion medium. The transmuter includes a target (1) on which the ray from an accelerator (8) falls, this ray getting across an evacuation channel (2). The ray is surrounded by first buffer layer (3), activation zone (4), second buffer layer (5) and delaying zone (6). Preferably the material for the first layer should be lead of bismuth. 48 claims, 19 figures
|
